The trendiest beaches right now
A dip in the sea in the morning or at the end of the day is really lovely and invigorating when the weather’s fine. Along the Promenade des Anglais, just a few minutes’ walk from our apartments, Nice offers pebble beaches, both public and private.
The most convenient (public, free): plage des Ponchettes
This is Nice’s most central public beach. Lively, cosmopolitan atmosphere and very easy to reach. Ideal for a quick dip after a stroll through Vieux-Nice. There are showers and beach volleyball courts nearby. Be warned though, it fills up fast in high season.
As everywhere in Nice, wearing water shoes is recommended for walking on the pebbles.
The most secret (free, public): La Réserve
My personal favourite. Located past Nice’s port, heading towards Villefranche-sur-Mer. The best way to get there from our apartments is by tram: line 2, Jean-Médecin station, get off at the Port Lympia terminus, then walk for 15 minutes. On foot, it’s a lovely walk, but allow around 40 minutes.
It’s not a sandy beach or a big stretch of pebbles, but a series of small coves and rocks. The vibe: local, wild and a bit adventurous. It’s the haunt of locals and diving enthusiasts (from the famous old Art Deco diving board). It’s beautiful and authentic. The water here is often clearer than elsewhere.
Do be aware though, space is limited and the rocks can be slippery (not ideal with young children).
The most iconic (private): Le Castel Plage
Nestled right below Castle Hill, at the end of the Promenade des Anglais, this is the quintessential Nice institution. The setting is spectacular and just a touch retro. The vibe: chic, trendy and typically Mediterranean. Very popular for its quality restaurant, right at the water’s edge. Rates: around €30 to €35 a day for a sun lounger (parasol extra, around €6).
Remember to book well in advance in summer
La Base by Riviera Nautic Sport
Parasailing, wakeboarding, water-skiing, paddleboarding, towable tubing, jet-skiing: the highest-rated water sports operator in the area.
Cash payment only. Open every day from 9:30am to 7pm.
My little tip
If you’re absolutely set on fine sand without breaking the bank, take the train or bus (15 to 20 minutes) to Plage des Marinières in Villefranche-sur-Mer, or to Plage de la Mala in Cap d’Ail.
